prevalence of traumatic tympanic membrane perforation in patients with a patulous eustachian tube
Authors
abstract
background: with respect to physical relations in force and pressure, we hypothesized that the prevalence of traumatic tympanic membrane perforation in patients with a patulous eustachian tube is greater than normal, because in eustachian tube patency, the internal air pressure of the middle ear will not increase after compression, subsequent to trauma. therefore the force upon the tympanic membrane may cause it to perforate easier. methods: in this study we evaluated 45 patients with traumatic tympanic membrane perforation. after otoscopy, modified inflation-deflation test was performed to determine the opening, closing, and residual pressure of the eustachian tube. results: approximately 60 percent had a patulous eustachian tube, 27% had poor eustachian tube function and 13% had normal eustachian tube function. conclusion: it appears that patients with a patulous eustachian tube are probably at high risk for traumatic tympanic membrane perforation.

PREVALENCE OF TRAUMATIC TYMPANIC MEMBRANE PERFORATION IN PATIENTS WITH A PATULOUS EUSTACHIAN TUBE
Background: With respect to physical relations in force and pressure, we hypothesized that the prevalence of traumatic tympanic membrane perforation in patients with a patulous Eustachian tube is greater than normal, because in Eustachian tube patency, the internal air pressure of the middle ear will not increase after compression, subsequent to trauma. full textPaper patching of the tympanic membrane as a symptomatic treatment for patulous eustachian tube syndrome.
BACKGROUND Application of one or several paper patches on the tympanic membrane can improve autophony and other symptoms in some patients with a patulous eustachian tube. METHOD The charts of 21 patients treated for patulous eustachian tube syndrome between 2006 and 2011 were studied for subjective improvement of symptoms following the application of paper patches. RESULTS Paper patching of...
full textUpdate on eustachian tube dysfunction and the patulous eustachian tube.
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The purpose of this review is to summarize the recent knowledge on eustachian tube dysfunction and the patulous eustachian tube. RECENT FINDINGS A clinically useful test for eustachian tube function is still lacking. Narrowing of the isthmus alone was demonstrated to be an insufficient cause of otitis media. Inflammatory mediators identified within the eustachian tube and mi...
full textEustachian tube function in adults with intact tympanic membrane.
UNLABELLED The Eustachian tube has the function of equilibrating the environmental pressure with inner pressure, protecting the middle ear from abrupt pressure changes. AIM To compare the Eustachian tube function in adults with and without history of otitis media and/or respiratory tract inflammation without tympanic membrane perforation. MATERIALS AND METHODS The Eustachian tube function w...
full textUncommon aetiology for autophony: patulous eustachian tube.
We report the case of a patient with autophony diagnosed with a patulous Eustachian tube. The patient was treated according to the technique described by Bluestone and Cantekin, inserting an indwelling catheter into the tube. Good results were obtained after one year of monitoring.
full textDiagnosis and Treatment of Patulous Eustachian Tube
The diagnosis and treatment of patulous eustachian tube were discussed with review of the literature. In addition, some new findings from the author's group related to this difficult disorder were presented. We have used 3-dimensional reconstruction of the computed tomography (3D-CT) of the eustachian tube lumen to detect very severe cases of the patulous eustachian tube. The new treatment of t...
